Fashion Detail

Hi Everyone,

How do you add detail on fashion designs to make them look realistic?

eg. the ra-ra, frilly look on this dress:

(It's a baby dress haha)

Thanks,

I have yet to learn that myself. If you come across anything about it, feel free to share lol :)

It's all about the contours first. Draw out the shape of all the bends and folds of the fabrics and then add the shadows where the fabric pulls in, and add highlights or leave blank where the fabric sticks out the most. From there you can add your prints, keeping in mind that it should be lighter in the highlights and darker in the shadows. The best medium for doing this is watercolor or Prismacolors. Try using one on top of the other to add more dimension to the fabric as well, using watercolors first, and the prismacolors on top of it when it is dry.

I'm about to sound like my old art teacher here, but DRAW FROM LIFE. Get practice by drawing the clothes in your closet, either on a hanger or on yourself in the mirror. Pay attention to shadows and highlights, and don't be afraid to use pure black and pure white (often people just seem to make everything in shades of gray--bold contrasts show more confidence) and how a garment hangs on the body. Though most fashion illustrations are abstract, I recommend going as realistic as possible for these first few attempts; you have to learn the rules in order to break them, after all. Do this on a regular basis, and it will eventually become a natural thing that you can do from memory and conceptualize on garments that don't actually exist yet.
